This project is part of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Quantum Technology Engineering (https://qte.ac.uk/)
Quantum materials exhibit extraordinary sensitivity to external stimuli near critical phase transitions, enabling novel sensing mechanisms. This project investigates novel materials such as twisted 2D materials and complex oxides to develop advanced sensors capable of detecting dynamic processes with ultra-high sensitivity for applications in nanometrology and nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS). The PhD candidate will engage in advanced nanofabrication, optomechanical experiments (incl. cryogenic), and thermodynamic phase diagram mapping, supported by collaborations with internationally recognised experts in 2D materials and nanomechanics.
Early Career researches are welcome to apply for internationally competitive personal grants with us:
Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions
The objective of MSCA PFs is to support early career researchers and foster excellence in research. The Postdoctoral Fellowships action targets researchers holding a PhD who wish to carry out their research activities abroad, acquire new skills and develop their careers. Applicants should comply with mobility rules: they must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the beneficiary (for European Postdoctoral Fellowships), or the host organisation for the outgoing phase (for Global Postdoctoral Fellowships) for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before the call deadline.
Newton International Fellowship
The Newton International Fellowship (NIF) programme provides support for outstanding early career researchers to make a first step towards developing an independent research career through gaining experience across international borders. This fellowship is for non-UK scientists who are at an early stage of their research career and wish to conduct research in the UK. The maximum award value will be £280,000 over two years.
Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowship
The Royal Academy of Engineering offers Research Fellowships each year to outstanding early-career researchers to support them to become future research leaders in engineering. Early-career researchers worldwide who have been awarded their PhD in the last four years can apply.
We are also happy to support excellent candidates in their application for local personal and regional PhD scholarships:
The Southampton Presidential bursaries for international postgraduate researchers. The scholarship funds the difference between UK and international level tuition fees. These PhD bursaries are open to all international candidates demonstrating exceptional academic performance.
Commonwealth Split-site PhD Scholarships
Applications are now open for Commonwealth Split-site Scholarships. These scholarships are for PhD candidates from low and middle-income Commonwealth countries to spend 12 months at a UK university as part of their doctoral studies in their home country.
The University of Southampton offers a Black Futures scholarship scheme, for talented Black and Mixed-Black heritage UK-domiciled students who want to pursue a PhD at Southampton. The scholarship provides: £20,000 per year, tax-free for 3.5 years, full UK fees, and a £1,100 training and support grant each year.
The University of Southampton offers a fee waiver to support the UK re-joining Horizon Europe, the EU’s key funding programme for PhD research and innovation. Our fees waiver funds the difference between UK and international tuition fees for 3.5 years.
China Scholarship Council Scholarships
The China Scholarship Council (CSC) offers scholarships to Chinese students who wish to study a PhD programme outside of China. The University of Southampton is recognised by the China Scholarship Council as a partner institute. This scholarship covers your full tuition fees subject to successful application for a CSC award for living costs.
Latvian Postdoctoral Scholarship
Our lab is happy to host visiting Latvian postdoctoral scientists or to support excellent applicants for Latvian Postdoctoral Scholarship, who wish to conduct parts of their research at the University of Southampton and our research facilities.
A number of MSc / BSc / Summer student projects are available in the lab.
